It’s always good to think ahead and anticipate some of the things that we will need to focus on during the coming year. Fortunately People Management magazine, the leading publication for HR professionals, has helped us by doing some analysis for us. Here is the list that they have produced of key HR trends to watch out for in 2016, with my commentary added to prompt you to do some advance thinking about these issues:
Gender pay gaps – do you know if there is a gap between what your male and female employees are paid? If not, you need to do some analysis.
In-work poverty – if you employ people on low wages do you provide any support? This could include signposting them to organisations such as Citizens Advice who can support them if they get into difficulty.
Cyber security – an increasing risk for all businesses. How tightly do you manage this?
Increased use of contract workers – does you business use contractors / freelancers? If so, what are the implications for ensuring your workforce is resilient to changes in the economy e.g. if the job market changes?
The National Living Wage – have you done your sums?
Stress management – recent studies have identified stress and mental health related ill health as a major cause of employee absence. How well equipped are line managers in your business to deal with this?
