Business, leadership and management skills training
In 2011 4Children and the DfE commissioned The Office for Public Management (OPM) to investigate business skills training in the sector. The report that they produced (Improving business skills in the childcare sector) highlighted the following issues:
• The current financial context means that the market is becoming more difficult for providers and sustainability is becoming a challenge. Costs of running the provision are increasing at the same time as parents’ ability to pay is reducing. Business skills are therefore becoming even more important.
• One of the key barriers was the cultural mindset of providers who did not consider business skills to be an essential element of running a childcare setting.
• There is a lack of general business skills amongst early years providers. Nursery and pre-school managers understand the importance of good management, but not necessarily business management.
In response to these findings, Flourishing People have developed a range of tailored training, coaching, team development and HR services that support the growth and development of childcare businesses and their staff, creating a business environment where staff and children can flourish. We work with settings right across the PVI and maintained sector, and also with childminders.
My Business, Leadership and Management skills training is designed to build the competence and confidence of setting owners, managers and committee members who need to become as competent in managing the business aspects of their setting as they are in managing the quality of childcare, giving them a range of practical tools that they can implement immediately rather than a theoretical awareness of good practice.

Childcare Business Advisers Programme
The Childcare Business Advisers Programme leads to a Level 5 qualification in either Business Support or Essential Consulting Skills aimed at those who provide business support advice and consultancy in the Early Years and Childcare sector. Many Local Authorities have now made achievement of this valuable qualification a requirement of all of their Early Years Business Support Managers and Advisers.
